The Invocation Of Leak (Leyak)

This leak ritual reminds me of the tantric dakini ritual, or some people also call dakini as vajrayogini or the “sky walker”. Some portraits show vajrayogini to be standing on one leg and fly without wings. Originally the dakini ritual is practised at cemetry area, using human "kapala" or skull cup to contain the offerings. The practice of dakini belong to the practice of highest yoga tanra. There are two stages: the generation and completion stage. Only practitioners received full empowerments and oral instructions are allowed to practise this ritual.

Ok, Let us come back to "leak" or "leyak". Basically according to the palm leave teachings, there are two ways for an individual to become a “leak”. The first is with the power of mantra and one’s internal energy, through the practice of shape shift and Kundalini yoga. The second one is through direct invocation of leak spirit in the wild. This Aji Pengleyakan Sanghyang Sarasija Maya is the transformation of leak using external force.

First the below offerings must be prepared:

1.      Black glutinous rice

2.      One rosted black feather chicken

3.      Eleven pieces of canang gantal, canang lenga wangi, canang burat wangi, paspan and the container of the offerings (sanggah cucuk)

This ritual must be performed in the middle of the night, near the vicinity of a crematorium. After the offerings are set, the magician must face the “sanggah cucuk” to perform the below recitation:

“HIDEP AKU SANGHYANG MAYA HIRENG. MELANG-MELANG KADI INDIT. WIJIL GENI HIRENG RING WUWUNANKU. DUMILAH KADI TATHIT. MANGEDEG AKU MAREP WETAN. MANEMBAH KI LEYAK PUTIH RING AKU, MANGADEG AKU MAREP KIDUL, MANEMBAH KI LEYAK ABANG RING AKU. MANGADEG AKU MAREP KULON, MANEMBAH KI LEYAK KUNING RING AKU.

MANGADEG AKU MAREP LOR, MANEMBAH KI LEYAK HIRENG RING AKU.

GURUN TA MAGURU RING AKU. APAN AKU SANGHYANG KUNDHI MANIK  HIRENG. MANGADEG AKU TAN PATALAPAKAN. MIBER AKU TAN PAHELAR. TAN HANA JURANG, TAN HANA PNGKUNG, TEKA ASAH, ASAH, ASAH. AKU ANGADEG TENGAH ING TAN HANA. SARWA DETYA, DANAWA, RAKSASA, SARWA DEWA, WIDYADARA-WIDYADARI, RUMANGSUK RING AWAK SARIRANKU, AKU ANGRANGSUK SARWA AENG, SARWA GALAK. SINGHA RING TANGANKU TENGEN.

BARONG RING TANGANKU KIWA. GARUDA RING AREPKU. NAGA RING

WUNGKURKU SING ANELENG AWAK SASIRANKU PADA NGEB. TEKA NGEB SIREP KUKUL DUNGKUL KE SATRU MUSUHKU KABEH. KUMATAP-KUMITIP NGEB. SING MATANGAN, MASOCA. MAKARNA, MAHIRUNG, MACANGKEM, PADA NGEB.

TAN KWASA NGUCAP-UCAP AWAK SAIRANKU. PAMEDHI NGEB. PANUNGGUN KARANG NGEB. TONYAN MARGA NGEB. ASU NGEB. SING MARA PADA BEGA. MANAK I CILI MANANDAN. SAKTI KAMAJAYA. MARGA KITA RING GAGELANG, MULIH NGAMBAH KABETEN LANGKANGANE. SIREP BUNGKEM SASTRU MUSUHKU WONG KABEH. TAN KWASA NGUCAP -UCAP AWAK SARIRANKU. POMA, POMA, POMA.”

It is said that through such a ritual, a magician can be transformed into a leak. This appearance can be reflected in a mirror when the above mantra is recited.

According to the legend, the leak of this Ajian can stand without the need to touch the ground, and it can fly without wings; and no hill or valley can deter it. Its head emits black fire accompanied by lighting like sparks. When it stands and faces the East, the leak that emits white flame will bow to it, when it stands and faces the south, all the leaks that emit red flames will bow to it, when it stands and faces West, all the leaks that emit yellow fire will bow to it, and when it faces the North, all the leak that emit black flame will bow to it. All the leaks, monsters and devas fear and learn from this Ajian. Even the dogs stop barking and fall asleep soundly. When the brave people track this leak, they will become mum and transfixed due to energy exhaustion. It is with such extraordinary abilities that this leak can perform its deeds with ease.

  2. Mr. Liew,

This is a uniquely fascinating piece on the Balinese Leyak Magic, and the first of a kind that I've searched so far concerning it thereof, as such information isn't published to the Western world audiences so freely. Furhtermore, since the Leyak Magic is predominantly derived from the Hindu beliefs and magical traditions, isn't it rather a "subset" of Balinese Hindu magic?

    1. Danny,

You can treat Leyak magic as a derivative of Hindu magic. It is just a very localized magic and very similar to the Left-Hand Tantric worship of Kali. For most of us, it would be a better choice to do Kali worship than Leyak.

As a matter of fact, many Asian magics are subset of Hindu magic in broader sense.

    2. Much thanks Mr. Liew on the clarifying information. Now to reiterate on the "black gluttonous rice", does it have to be cooked, or is it raw (uncooked)?

  3. Mr. Liew,

Does the various colors of the flames emitted by the leyak (white, yellow, red, black) signifies the different power and level and ranks of the leyak themselves?

    Cordially,

    Danny
