Curing Possession With Feng Shui (风水驱邪)

In Asian folk believes, when a person is having bad luck, then it is best that he/she avoid visiting the wilderness, graveyards or anywhere that is filled with wandering spirits because this person is tend to be possessed by ghosts.

My friend’s daughter, May returned from her Langkawi visit and she was not behaving like her normal self: she would tremble uncontrollably in the evening in addition that this lady’s limbs would be frozen solid. May would laugh and cry as if a crazy person. Other than that May would whisper to a piece of wall every night. All in all those strange actions have raised great concerns to her parents.

Since May’s condition has aggravated and she became languish day after day. Having no option; my friend gave me a call out of no choice but he gave me a precondition that I must not use any magic rituals as he is an ardent Christian. In fact, my opinion is that spirit possession issues are mostly psychological and that he should visit a psychologist and not me.

Reluctantly, this pal of mine is an old acquaintance since primary school and that I watched the lady grown from a small toddler; I just have to help by hook or by crook. So I brought my compass and dropped into my pal’s house hopping to find an excuse to wriggle my way out.

When I come face to face with May, her face was pale white with eye sockets and chin covered with dark green aura. Her head half lowered apparently avoiding my stare. After a while, she ran towards the wall and repeatedly said: “I am scared, very scared, what to do?”

Strangely speaking, her voice sounded like an old man. So I opened up my compass and found the house is a 7th period house facing southwest with main door opening at southeast. There were two pieces of big mirrors opposite each other and since there was not direct sunlight, the place looked cold and gloomy.

There were many large size religious related and holy items in the house and in addition, Mary’s room was full of posters of entertainers. Her bed was facing south and hence absorbing the negative energy of flying star 5. Coincidentally, the yearly star 2 drops into the bedroom; hence Mary’s room attracted spirits.

With those telltale signs in mind, I immediately asked my pal to rearrange his furniture and took down excess religious decorations. As soon as we have made the rearrangements, Mary suddenly said that she was tired and she went to sleep. Her mom kept her watch over her daughter just in case.

Well, it is also time for me to leave as I didn’t want to miss my favorite musical show. Just as I was to step out of the house, my pal pulled me aside and asked: “Do you have any protective amulets just in case?”

I said simply: “Just cross your finger and pray.”

My prediction was correct, Mary recovered right after her short nab. So I can declare the spirit possession case closed. Since spirit possession case can be solved with Feng Shui methodologies, I can assure you that spirits cannot harm anyone. Or should I say that spirit possession is only “mind over matter”.

The Spirits That Throw Stones (石头鬼)

What do you call a spirit that throws pebbles?

People in the west may only call it the mischievous ghost, but Malaysians have their own nomenclature. The locals would name a spirit by that it does. In this case a spirit that throws pebbles as ‘stone ghost’ or ‘hantu batu’. Incidentally this is also a form of poltergeist as it disturbs people.

Having said so, this stone ghost is more dangerous than the poltergeist as the pebbles thrown can really hurt a person in the vicinity. Although people say that spirits are nonsense, the pebbles are real hard solid physical pebbles. These spirits like to throw pebbles at the roof of a house and hence the implied name. People in the house would feel as if outside is raining pebbles and when they venture out to investigate. They will be attacked by these stones from every direction.

Although it is quite rare to hear the news of mischievous spirits now days, it was quite popular in the 50’s. Interestingly this stone ghost does not have a form and its presence is only noticed by its stone throwing behavior. People believe that when the spirit dislikes a person walking into the environment, it will announce its presence by throwing pebbles at the person. However, some expert said that the appearance of stone ghost resembles a person with a wide big mouth with sharp teeth and an extremely big belly. I have not personally seen it so would not be able to comment.

I have experienced the prank of hantu batu some time ago when I was a fanatic of ghost hunting. There was a famous vacated haunted house in Jalan Duta that has seen massacre of the previous owner’s household. My ghost hunting friends and I sneaked into the house in the mid of the night to investigate. After walking around the place, we found nothing unusual. Everyone was a little disappointed and as I was opening my big mouth to say: “Perhaps there is no stupid ghost…”

At that instance before I could finish the sentence, the sound of pebbles dropping on the roof was heard loud and clear. The sound continues for a minute or so but no one was struck by a physical stone. This is very strange but true encounter.

Another friend of mine working for a logging company told me that these mischievous stone throwing spirits would start to throw pebbles at the workers’ quarters in the jungle if people forgot to make offerings of benzoin and curry mutton on Friday afternoon.

People who travel at night through forest trails may be attacked by pebbles from nowhere and that too may be the work of hantu batu, although we cannot rule out that was the prank of naughty kids. Once I was trying to catch a banana spirit in my friend’s durian plantation, a stone was thrown towards me but missed. Perhaps that was a warning sign or a distraction as the banana spirit subsequently escaped my grasp.

An aboriginal witchdoctor told me that in order to stop the prank of these hantu batu, one only need to dig a deep hole in front of the house with a sharp object such as a machete. After that 7 pieces of lemongrass leaves and 7 pieces of rusted iron nails are put into the hole. After that one needs to burn an oil lamp for one night in the house and the whole is covered first thing in the morning. And then the sharp object that was used to dig the whole should be used to strike onto the earth 7 times. I would add a reminder that the place where a hole is to be dug must be freed from tree roots. And the sharp object must be dipped in cold water for one night before hand. In addition, the person should change into a set of new clothing or the clothing he/she has worn for the ritual must be washed before re-enters the house.

It is believed the above ritual shall stop the tricks of hantu batu. So if you are tormented by a hantu batu, try out the above ritual before fleeing your house.

The Headless One (无头鬼的传说)

In the West we have the headless horseman, but in Malaysia we have the ‘headless ones’ or ‘hantu tenggelung’. The Malaysian headless ghosts are quite harmless as they mainly appear beneath a bridge searching for their lost heads. It was once a popular local belief that whenever a bridge is built, one man shall be beheaded and his head is used to support the building of a bridge.

This was quite a popular legend amongst Malaysian folks in the 70’s as the government started to build many bridges for the linking of cities and villages. Stories were told to warn kids so that they would not go out of the house after night because the bridge contractors would patrol the streets to abduct unwary folks. These abducted folks would then be beheaded for the sake of bridge building. Whenever there are accidents during bridge constructions, people would hint that some unfortunate folks in the area would be sacrificed.

There are many beliefs concerning these headless ones. Many people believe that these headless souls only haunt a place for not more than 100 days. Some people say that the headless spirits only appear during full moon or during drizzling Friday night. Yet many people believe that only one or two person amongst a group of people can see these unfortunate spirits and that these spirits would only appear when the surrounding is in pitch dark.

Other versions of headless ghosts were the beheaded victims of Japanese Imperial Armies or those who had lost their heads in some freak accidents. My friend Ms Wong had a face to face encounter with a headless ghost when she accompanied her mom and her sister to Penang many years ago. They stayed in an old hotel near the jetty. At midnight, strange things started to happen: the TV was turned on and off repeatedly. Ms Wong was so frightened that she pulled her blanket to cover her head and subsequently dozed off. The next morning, her sister told Ms Wong that she saw a headless Japanese lady in kimono sat on Ms Wong’s belly while holding its head with its left hand and combing its hair. This incident has caused Ms Wong to have phobia to stay in old hotel.

The Secret Of Inverted Wok (覆锅的秘密)

The old timers would remember this scene while travelling passing Malay kampong (villages) not so long ago: an erected pole with the top end covered by a wok, basket or a large bowl. Well, do you know the secret behind it?

Well, the above pole and wok serves as a warning to anyone who have the intention of getting his/her hands on fruits or vegetables planted there. It was a sign of the old Malay meaning that "you are warned" that the place is magically protected. The Malays would not cast a curse on anyone who had not been warned, so they erected a pole with an inverted wok to protect their crops.

Normally, jembalang tanah or earth gnomes are the best candidates for guarding an orchard as they are more territorial and do not wonder about. As usual, offerings of pop rice, yellow glutinous rice and curry mutton are offered periodically to the spirits with the recitation of below mantra:

Hei kau Jembalang Hitam,
Hei kau Jembalang Putih,
Hei kau Jembalang Hijau,
Hei kau Jembalang Merah,
Hei kau Jembalang Kuning,
Jibrail pagar ku,
Mohon jagalah (padi)ku,
Berkat doa,
Lailahaillallahmuhammadurrasullullah.

However if the earth gnomes are creating the problem, or it the owner wanted to cure a person being disturbed by earth gnomes, then the below mantra would be recited:

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim,
Hei jin tanah, jembalang bumi,
Nyah engkau dari sini,
Pusat tasik pauh janggi,
sana tempat engkau,
ah tunggang-langgang,
jangan engkau kacau anak Adam,
Habuan engkau aku bagi,
Derhaka engkau pada aku,
Derhaka engkau pada Allah,
Berkat doa,
Lailahaillallahmuhammadurrasullullah.

When I was young, my cousins and I used to steal some rambutan fruits from a fruit orchards near by. Even though a pole with the above setting was erected, touch wood that none of us suffer any stomach ache problems after wards...

Experiences With Hantu Gaharu (沉香鬼片面缘)

It is still a norm when my Malay friends smell fragrance or strange smells in the surrounding, they would attribute it to the presence of supernatural beings, aka ‘ghosts’. Somehow the Chinese also bought in such an idea too.

Tropical Malaysia has many jungle treasures and many locals believe that these natural treasures are watched over by spirits. One of the most precious treasures of Malaysian rainforest is the agarwood or in Malay, ‘gaharu’.

My friend, Uncle Sam has a piece of virgin jungle land near Bukit Mertajam and inside his land; there are a few natural grown agarwood trees. For the people in the agarwood industry, an agarwood plant can only be productive after 10 years at least; and an old agarwood tree can live to over 100 years old. So, natural agarwood trees are very rare and expensive. Knowing this fact, Uncle Sam built a small house in the jungle to guard over his treasures.

I frequently visit Uncle Sam’s jungle house to meditate while Uncle Sam minds his own business. Somewhere during an afternoon in early 2015, while Uncle Sam and I were chatting in his house, we heard a loud bang as if an agarwood tree had fallen struck by lightning. But when we rushed to the source of the sound; nothing was found.

Uncle Sam told me afterwards that it was the working of ‘hantu gaharu’ or the watcher of the agarwood tree. Due to the value of the agarwood raisin, some local villagers would resort to sneak into Uncle Sam’s property to chop down the agarwood tree to seek these agarwood resins. But since these people did not asked the permission of the agarwood spirit by making offerings to the tree watcher, the spirit produced loud noise to warn these unscrupulous folks.

It is also after the fact that Uncle Sam has built a Datuk’s shrine under a huge agarwood tree for the hantu gaharu to stay in, the spirit is happy enough to warn Uncle Sam on upcoming intrusions. A Malay bomoh (witchdoctor) once told Uncle Sam that felt that as if he is watched by a pair of invisible eyes every time he walks passes the Datuk’s shrine. The bomoh also claimed that Uncle Sam’s house has many invisible beings and they caused him to feel unease.

At times, when I was meditating in the house, I heard Uncle Sam calls my name. But when I went to investigate, there was no one in the house. I have also heard sounds of people walking in boots around the house and whispers near my ears when I was alone in the house.

The most inexplicable incident happens during 3am in the witching hour. Uncle Sam left the house to me and went down the hill. I was lying on the floor half slept and I was facing the house main door. To be frank, it was quite difficult to sleep in the jungle with all sort of insect symphonies. Suddenly, the main door opened with a loud bang. A silhouette of a creature entered into the house and seems to search for something. I thought it was Uncle Sam returned from his field trip. So I turned on my torchlight and shine at the shadow. Almost instantly, the shadowy figure was gone but the door remained open. Perhaps I didn’t lock the door properly and the mountain wind can be strong at times.

I told Uncle Sam the incident but he said it was the doing of the agarwood watcher. Incidentally, in old days if anyone who wants to harvest agarwood must first recite the below mantra to chase away the watcher:

“Hei, nenek datuk mamabang gaharu,
Kalau jahu tolong katakana,
Oh Datuk Betala Bumi,
Jin tanah, jembalang tanah,
Berhala besi anak Ruwani,
Si bujant Ruwani,
Anak Wayah,
Si Bujang Bandan,
Aku minta tunjukkan,
Kalau tidak kau tunjukkan,
Kau derhaka kepada Allah,
Sir Allah Sir mangga tangan,
Dat Allah hatiku,
Sipat Allah matakau,
Pergi kau jeput kumbang jantan,
Dalam hati jantung kau.”

Of course, no one recites this mantra any more now days. So, let’s just keep it as a cultural heritage.

Make And Break With Stove (火炉的魔法)

The yant for stove magic which must be empowered with:
1. Om Put Ta Yak Namah
2. Jantang Santang Iti Singkaray Arkson Kar Jantang

Perhaps this form of Thai magic is suitable for housewives or cooks as they would be around the kitchen and stoves daily. So, husbands, beware of your wives!

To call back the heart of a run away husband, or if a husband has an affair; then the below make up magic is good:

First, one must get a piece of Acacia Confusa (相思树) tree leaf and draw the above yant. After that put the yant in the husband's pillow. Then get a piece of his underwear and put it under a burning stove. After that use a pair of chopsticks to strike at the brim of the stove and call his name. The husband shall then think of the wife with burning desires and return home!

To break the relationship of husband and his new found love, then draw the above yant with durian fruit juice and put the yant under the fire stove. After that the wife should use a sharp knife to strike on the brim of the stove while calling the opponent's name. In such a way that the opponent lady would feel as being burnt by fire when come face to face with the husband...

Of the above yant can also be drawn on a piece of paper and then burnt. The ash is then mixed with flower water and the water is then splashed on the path where the opponent would pass through.

So, men; maybe know you know how Thai women can take control of their husbands. Think twice before you want to engage a Thai lady as she would have many formidable weapons to control you! Of course, the above ritual is just one of the examples. Worse, your penis may not 'function' too when you go out to flirt...
