The below Malay black magic is from the coastal area of east Sumut, North Sumatera. Its purpose is to make a person mad or dead.

First, prepare the below materials:

·         44 kinds of delicacies

·         Needles

Now make the figurine of your enemy then fumigate it with incense smoke while chanting the below mantra while taking one needle and pierce into the figurine, repeat the chanting until all the needles are finished.

After that, the figurine is put into the boat and then the boat is hang on a tree and continues to chant for about 20 minutes while turning the miniature boat. If you have done the ritual right, then your victim will feed as if riding on a boat while experiencing strong gale. This person will soon become mad if not dead.

The mantra:

“Haum

Kata di aku

Haum

Kata di kau

Hai jumbalang manyuruk tanpo kapalo

Bakobat kaki dek giring-giring

Losap nyawo kalo tak gilo

Dondam tepondam bak ilang goring

(Roughly translated:

Hum! It is my words against yours. Oh gnome craws without head come with ringing sounds. If not dead then you will become crazy. I will not stop until my revenge is carried out. Carry out my order to take life. Do not transgress my orders! If you transgress my orders then I will not serve you foods. Datuk Hitam will punish you. Make so-and-so crazy, take his/her life! My spirit is on my side, your spirit is on yours, and my spirit is the spirit of the hunter of lake and stream hunter!”)

Legend Of Sumatera King Crocs

South of Sumatera is a district covered by swamps and rivers hence it is not surprising that the population of crocodiles are plenty; until there is a belief of were-crocodiles amongst local residents. These were-crocs will turn into actual crocodiles after they are dead. There are tales begin with woman gave birth to white crocodile and subsequently the crocodile is released into the river mouth together with the offering of white chickens and pop rice. Periodically, the white crocs will revisit the river bank to meet their kin. These kin usually prepare some food for the white croc and at the same time, request the croc to bestow skills such as shamanic and treatment techniques. The most popular request was to request the white croc to give them bezoar stones tucked in the mouths of the white crocs.

There are many legends told throughout generations concerning crocodiles along the banks of Musi River in Palembang; amongst many is the legend of the white crocodiles. There are a few rivers said to have seen white crocodiles such as: Ogan River, especially under the bridge of Ogan River, Kertapati in Palembang and along the upstream of Ogan River. The sighting of a white crocodile is always taken as an omen that a natural disaster will take place in Sumsel or in Indonesia.

Similarly people in Pemulutan, Kabupaten Ogan Ilir, sumsel also believe in legends concerning crocodiles. Local natives believe that their ancestors are crocodiles. So crocodile magic are very prevalent in Pemulutan and many people become crocodile shamans. It is said that many people in Pemulutan, especially the bandits can turn themselves into crocodiles if they go into a river or swamps.

According to a 16th century Palembang legend, the king of Palembang was having headache on controlling the number of crocodiles in Musi River. These crocs were threatening the lives of Palembang people at that time. So the king of Palembang hired a croc shaman from India. Consequently the Indian shaman was successfully in taming all of the crocs in the river and the king gave the shaman many valuable presents.

After that, the king of Palembang invited the Indian shaman to croc infested inland to tame all of the crocs there. Again the shaman has successfully completed his task. So the king told the shaman: “Try to make the crocs to become violent once more. I want to know how marvel is your power?”

The Indian shaman was so indulged in the praises by praises from the king so made the crocs violent again. Then chickens and livestock were thrown into the river and all were quickly consumed by the crocs. At this time, a Palembang soldier invited lured the Indian shaman into the crocs horde. It was surefire that the shaman also being consumed by the crocs.

It was said the location where the Indian shaman was killed to be along the eastern costal of Southern Sumatera, such as Pulaurimau or in Pemulutan. So it is not a surprise that the crocs in Musi River have different characters with the crocs in the districts of inlands of Southern Sumatera. There were no violent crocs in Musi River but all the crocs in the inlands are notorious of their fierceness.

So who is more violent: crocs or human?

Mantras Arts Of Defense

Yes ... But remember to recite the mantra first before you punch the guy.

Below is a list of Malay short mantras grouped under arts of combat and confrontation:

Mantra below is recited before punching. Recite the mantra once and blow a breath onto your fists:

Biss…

“Ya dara bulah romuk ramanina.

Hu Allah.”

Another mantra for punching your enemy, recite the below mantra:

“Allah lah masuk ke Muhammad.

Muhammadlah masuk kepadaku.

Nur ada Muhammad berdiri.

Illallah hu.”

One more … First clench your fists, recite below mantra once and blow a breath onto your fists:

“Menyia Muhammad Allah lalu.”

Before slapping your opponent, recite the below:

“Diam Muhammad. Allah lalu.”

On second thought, if one tries to figure out which mantra is appropriate for which occasion; then he or she might just give up punching the opponent. This is an ingenious method to control one’s fury, at least I would think so J.

Ilmu Besi Kursani

There is a type of ritual for protection popular with Malay society. The purpose is to activate invulnerability to sharp objects, to silence the enemy, to protect valuables from thief, to increase power of punch, to be safe from danger and food poisoning and also to absorb others invulnerability.

There are a few versions of Besi Kursani mantra amongst the Malays. I will list three versions of them for your reading pleasure:

“Bosi Pasak, Bosi Kursani

Togak toguh selero dalam badanku

Berokat Laailahaillallah

huallah”.

“Hai Bosi Putih Bosi Kursani

Bosi Palilit di pinggangku

Kuat aku baki Saidina Ali

Gagah aku bak Saidina Hamzah

Alhamdu, Alhamdu, Alhamdu

Usah dikau makan hati yang putih

Engkau makan darah dek daging

Jikalau engkau makan hati yang putih

Durhako engkau kepada Allah,

Hai Kaddam Kuddim

Keluarlah engkau daripado tompat yang jahat

Ke tujuh petalo langit dan ke tujuh petalo bumi

Keluarlah engkau daripado tompatnyo

Berokat doa Lailaha Illallah Muhammad rasulullah”

“Terdirilah bosi kursani

Didalam batang tubuhku,

Dek aku mengetahui

Laahaula wa laa quataillabillahi ‘aliyul ‘adzim,

Yahun kanda dek aku mengetahui

Laahaula wa laa quataillabillahi ‘aliyul ‘adzim,

Fillah amri saina nan bangkit

Dek aku mengetahui

Laahaula wa laa quataillabillahi ‘aliyul ‘adzim,

Sandalmanzud Rasulullahi salallahu alaihi wassalam

Qullahu ‘adzim. Alfatihah”.

I just want put a short addition to the above ritual that the above ritual must be preceded with ‘menaikkan’ ritual or the ‘arising’ ritual similar to:

‘Menaikan’ is a term used in Malay ritual and it has the meaning of initial ritual and has the purpose of unification of the ritual with the practitioner.

The Besi Kursani ritual must be closed with “mandi minyak” ritual or “oil bath”:

However, the “mandi minyak” ritual must be led by a Master as it involves the use of hot oil.

Invoking Invulnerability of Besi Kursani

It is said that invulnerability of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) can protect one from bullets and even bombs.

This knowledge utilises 18 main points on our body and no fasting is required. In order to invoke the parent iron points on our body, suffice to use an ordinary cloth made to the size of our fist, wet it with green coconut water; then the parent iron points of our body are pressed directly and the results are tested (at own risks).

Below is the mantra:

“NABI GURSANI PALAPISINI, BATANG KALUNGKU,NABI ADA ADAM RI TUBUHKU,NABI MUHAMMAD RI BULUNGKU,ALLAH TA’ALA RI NYAWAKU BERKAT KUN FAYAKUN,AKKUNG PANGAKUNG,AKKING SAMULAJADINYA,ALLAH TA’ALA PATONG KANA BERKAT NABI ARMOI..”

The 18 points are:

1.      two toes

2.      navel

3.      tip of the chest

4.      throat

5.      crown

6.      nape

7.      middle back

8.      centre back waist

9.      ribs

10.  center of the elbow

11.  right wrist vein

12.  left writ vein

13.  back of the big toe

14.  stand or squat blow a breath at knee

15.   thumb

16.   thumb pressing to the navel (this technique doesn’t need the cloth blob)

17.   crown

18.   central to the palms of the hands

The empowerment method is as picture below:

Xiangxi 3: Chengzhou Fu (辰州符)

The complete book of Chengzhou Fu.

Shen Chongwen described in his book Xiangxi: Fenghuang: “The practitioners of Chengzhou Fu concentrated in Fenghuang.” Chengzhou was originally the ancestral home of Hunt and Pu tribe. Later it became the ruling place of Yelang. Sorcerers learnt through generations of experience forming area specific magical system called “Chengzhou Fu” or Chengzhou talismans.

Needless to say that there are many types of Chengzhou Fu: some Fu uses burning joss sticks and paper money as media to inscribe the talisman in the air or water; some use chopsticks or sword to inscribe talismans in a bowl of wine or chicken blood and for an expert; it is suffice simply to draw the talisman using his or her fingers. In short, in the Chengzhou tradition, Fu can do everything.

A renowned Chinese scholar Chianmu wrote about Chengzhou Fu:

“I was staying in a village when I was young. One day, I saw a Chengzhou Fu exponent in a village visited by a farmer with a swelling leg. The exponent drew the figure of a leg on the wall, then takes a knife and cut lines on the figure. Blood oozing from the leg figure on the wall, when the blood finally stopped, the farmer’s swelling leg has recovered. I swear what I seen am true, but can’t explain how a drawn leg can produce such a large quantity of blood.

In another incident, a person was bitten by a poisonous snake and subsequently succumbed to the snake poison. A Chengzhou Fu exponent was passing by; he took a knife and drew a circle encircling the corpse, and then stabbed a few scissors with open mouth into the ground. After that, the exponent started to chant, snakes from all directions came and entering the circle through the opening scissor mouths. The exponent grasped the snakes one by one and compared the snake mouth with the bite mark on the corpse.  Not matching ones are released and leave through the scissor mouth. After measuring around 10 snakes or so, a match was found. So the exponent pressed the culprit’s mouth onto the wound mark and let the snake suck back its venom. After that, the snake is let go through one of the opening scissor. While the snake was passing through the scissor mouth, the scissor snapped close and the snake was cut into two and died. While the corpse was slowly gaining consciousness, then sat up and finally stood up. This was indeed the work of God.”

I have personally collected some stories about Chengzhou Fu, but none are as amazing as the above two. May be I will share them some other time. In fact, the ancient Xiangxi was quite backwards with insanitary conditions; there were no means of seeking medical attentions. When people are feeling sick, they can only consume some herbs or Fu from sorcerers. If they have subsequently recovered, then people would say that was the power of Fu. On the other hand, it was the fate.

Xiangxi 2: Falling Into Cave (落洞)

A mysterious cave in Xiangxi

Xiangxi (湘西) becomes mysterious because of its walking death (赶尸), Chengzhou Fu (辰州符) and Luotong (落洞).

“Luotong” literarily means “falling into cave”. It is only specific to ladies and Xiangxi region only. There are many big and small mysterious caves in Xiangxi and local folks believe that these cave spirits will come out and look for human wife.

Girl falling into cave (女子落洞): “meaning the person is either loved by cave spirit or her soul is snatched away (by the cave spirit).”

During certain stage in a Xiangxi girl’s life that she seems to fall into a state of addiction, her face becomes as brilliant as peach flower, and her eyes are as bright as the stars. Her voice is as enchanting as musical instrument while her body emitted a type of fragrance. She wipes furniture, sweeps and washes the floor until an original dilapidated home becomes clean and free of dust. This girl is as if entered into an unworldly realm. According to local belief, this girl has already given herself to god, so she lives in a fantasy and happy world. This girl is now uninterested in any worldly man, she awaits her god to fetch her in an auspicious day. When the day finally comes, the girl will die with a smile. Hence is the description of “falling into cave”.

The girl’s parents can only burn her belongs outside a cave in lieu of an actual marriage ceremony. For a few knowledgeable parents, they will marry the girl with a worldly man to break the cave spirit’s spell. It is said that nine out of ten girls fallen into cave will die, the sole survivor will become crazy as if her soul is snatched by the cave spirit.

A writer Shen Chongwen wrote in his book:

“Ladies in Xiangxi have three critical stages in their lives:

From 16 to 23 years old: they are beautiful but keep things to themselves, failed to have a good marriage; these girls easily fall into cave and died.

Around 30 years old: they tend to become witches.

In old age: the ladies tend to become Phi Pop.

It is indeed the hysterical part of ladies in Xiangxi that makes Xiangxi a secretive place for the outsiders. Hiding behind these secrets are moving tragedies and enchanting poetries. ”
