Hantu Laut (Sea Ghost)





A Hantu Laut or "Sea Ghost" is also known as "Hantu Raya Air (Water)".



This type of spirit is said to possess a person, cause people to jump into sea or to capsize a boat. It is believed that certain incantation and food offering perform periodically at sea side would be able to pacify this Hantu Laut. Many local fishermen believe that if one becomes the blue eye boy of the Hantu Laut, then he would be able to catch many types of sea food effortlessly.



Once upon a time in the coastal areas of Kelantan, Trengganu and Pahang, yearly sea offering event will be held. This type of ritual is called “Main Pantai” (The Play Of The Beach) and a water buffalo is sacrificed during the ritual.



Hantu Laut is known by many names in the Western part of Peninsula Malaysia:



·         At headlands and bays, it is known as “Muara Terati”

·         At rivers, it is known as “Muara Jaya” or “Mura Terata”

·         At sea, it is known as “Amas Jenanas”



Some bomoh believe that the origin of Hantu Laut are the throw away jinn from the upper streams of rivers. The tricks fond by Hantu Laut are:



·         Transformation of a big beautiful ship floating aimlessly in the sea

·         Heavy fishing net but empty after hoist up

·         Transformation of a very beautiful girl in the sea asking for help, but vanishes upon approach

·         Transformation of an island that will never be approached



Below mantra is said to call upon Hantu Laut:



“Hei tok Mambang Puteh,

Tok Mambang Hitam,

Yang diam di bulan dan matahari,

Melimpahkan sekalian hajatku,

Melakukan segala kehendakku,

Assalamualaikum!



Hei sahabatku Mambang Tali Harus,

Yang berulang ke pusat Tasik Pauh Janggi,

Sampaikan pesanku ini,

Kepada Datok Si Rimpun alam,

Aku minta tolong peliharakan kawan-kawanku,



Hei, sekalian sahabatku yang di laut,

Hei, Sidang Saleh,

Siding Bayu,

Sidang Mumin,

Sidang Embang,

Sidang Biku,

Mambang Segera,

Mambang Singgassana,

Mambang Dewata,

Mambang Laksana,

Mambang Sina Mata,

Mambang Dewati,

Mambang Dewanti,

Mambang Tali Harus,

Imam ali Jalil namanya Imam di laut,

Bujang Ransang namanya,

Hulubalang di laut,

Nek Rendak namanya,

Yang diam di bawah,

Nek Joring namanya,

Yang diam di telok,

Nek Jeboh namanya yang diam di tanjong,

Datok Batin Alam namanya yang Datok di laut,

Bujang Sri Layang namanya,

Yang diam di awan-awan,

Malaikat Sabur Ali namanya,

Yang memegang pelangi,

Iaitulah adanya,

Ya Nabi,

Ya Wali Allah,

Tertegak panji-panji Muhammad,

Geda-geda Allah,

Aku minta kramat pawang,

Berkat kramat,

Datok Mengkudum Puteh,

Berkat kramat daulat,

Sultan Iskandar Sah adanya.”
